Topic: Clicks & Pops on drums
Hi guys, I'm curious to hear ur opinions...
According to a friend, its quite common to hear these in chopped drums or loose drum hits..
He mentioned these can be solved by applying volume envelopes on the drum tracks...after every hit
Anyone use this technique, is it necessary and how to do it properly?
Thanx in advance!

Re: Clicks & Pops on drums
sometimes u get a small click at the end of a hit if the envelope doesnt finish properly
its the waveform cutting off in the middle of a wave if u apply tiny about of volume envelope to start and end of the hits u can remove it entirely
i have to do it quite alot with kick drums especially when chopping and repeating them for a buildup say

I was wondering:
does using a gate fix the same problem in a slightly different way?

I guess so, if you set it properly. It may also depend on the volume of the bits you want to gate out as to whether it would work.

lol thats dangerous advice

@ aczid - dunno about that, might help but its a bit long winded unless its to remove a click from an entire track already layed out...

Ok thanx fellaz! gonna try these tips...
Also within Ableton, using fade mode in ur sample wave helps...it cuts out the beginning and end of the hit...

Re: Clicks & Pops on drums
Also, use EQ to remove the sounds you dont want, not higher the ones you want. and you will have less clicks in your final track. i prefer cuting out noises in the end of samples rather than trying to fade them out. cuz with compressors and other dynamic effects that balances the volume between the highest and lowest sound might the fuckers get back into the mix again.

Re: Clicks & Pops on drums
@ Subcomandante, yea sure I use eq-s on drums but even then it still affects the chopped hits at times...and yes that fade mode in Ableton does take away the dynamics and punch...it was just something I noticed I could use to minimize them clicks...
Guessin the cut out at the end option is the best...
@ Commie, cool feature in Acid!
Don't they have that in Live?
thanx for all comments and suggestions folks

Re: Clicks & Pops on drums
of coarse you should not have to eq out clicks. but what i mean is that when you are mixing or mastering, if you are eq'ing the way that you raises the sound you want to hear, rather than lowering the sounds you dont want to hear, are you more likely to get clicks. maybie a bit offtopic, but im thinking ahead.

You can adjust the envelope as long or as short as you want, over each sample, or every sample at once, and can even remove it.
It's one thing that I miss about that program.
